A negative saving means paying more overall in this scenario. One loan, fixed current threshold and entered constant interest/growth assumptions. Write-off timing is supplied by you, not assessed. Ignores future policy, interest subsidies, payroll rounding and timing differences. Voluntary repayments are normally non-refundable and may be wasted on a balance that would be written off.

Calculation details
Projection
Each month the balance accrues interest, then the annual-threshold repayment estimate plus any extra payment is deducted, capped at the outstanding balance. Earnings grow at the entered annual rate; the current plan threshold stays fixed. The remaining balance is written off at your entered horizon.
Interpreting savings
A positive saving means total payments fall with overpayments in the scenario. A negative result means you pay more overall, often because the standard schedule would have left a balance to be written off. This ignores the investment return you could have earned on extra payments.
Limits
One UK loan only, constant entered interest and growth, no interest subsidies or future threshold/policy changes. The model approximates monthly payroll deductions and does not determine write-off eligibility. Voluntary repayments are normally non-refundable; confirm actual balance and settlement terms with SLC.
Sources
- Plan thresholds, rates and simultaneous undergraduate/postgraduate deductions
- Loan earnings follow Class 1 NI earnings; pension net pay does not lower loan earnings
- Multiple employers and Self Assessment loan aggregation
- Voluntary repayments may not help before write-off and are not refundable
